Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure to reduce unwanted skin texture and to get rid of scars. This procedure is also sometimes referred to as Dermaplaning. It is a means to provide the skin with a smoother and brighter finish and to combat signs of aging, such as wrinkles.
During this procedure, the outermost and damaged layers of skin are scraped away using a hand held device. There are a few tools available for this procedure, you can discuss them with your surgeon and find out which will be used for your treatment. The rough contours of the scar are scraped until they become even with the surrounding skin.
Usually local anesthesia is administered which is sometimes also accompanied by a sedative.
The number of treatments required depends on how much work needs to be done. Usually one is enough to bring about satisfactory results. Other times, the patient might need more than one. In that case the possibility for a follow up treatment is discussed during consultations.
For most of these procedures local anesthesia is used to numb the area being treated so the person doesn’t feel anything. The doctor might also use a sedative that causes the individual to relax. In cases where a large area is being treated or the treatment is intense, general anesthesia might also be used. Either way, the individual does not experience any pain during the procedure.
You can expect to return to your daily routine after two weeks of surgery. Complete recovery might take a little longer, but in 2 weeks, the pain and the worst of bruising and swelling will have passed.
The cost of the procedure depends on how big an area is being treated and what level of work is required. You are requested to come in for a consultation so that we can provide you an exact figure for your treatment.
There will be bruising and swelling after the procedure. These will most likely be accompanied by some discomfort as well. The surgeon will give you ointments and pain killers to ease and speed up the recovery. You might experience scabs forming over the treated area, which will then peel off to reveal pinkish skin. This doesn’t always happen but it is a possibility. It is no cause for worry though as it means new skin is growing.
You should be able to go back to work or school in 2 weeks.
