This procedure has been around since 1992 and has shown great results and helped many. In laser assisted Uvulopalatoplasty, part of the uvula is removed with a CO2 laser. This achieves enlargement of the oropharynx creating more room and thus reducing the airway blockage that results in snoring.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will not be required to stay in a hospital overnight. Usually one session yields considerable results but a lot of times people will go for a second and third to eradicate the problem completely. Local anesthetic is used so during the procedure the patient feels no pain. The procedure comprises of trimming the uvula and soft palate with a laser.
It varies from person to person. A lot of times the desired results are achieved in a single session. However, other times a patient might need to come in for up to three sessions.
The recovery from this surgery is usually not very difficult. However, in rare cases it is possible to develop a sore throat after a session (which heals in due time), or in even rarer cases it is possible to develop a feeling of having something at the back of your throat.
So far this procedure is only being used to treat snoring. At this stage it is not able to cure sleep apnea.
CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) laser is used to perform this procedure. It is a gas laser and is used for skin resurfacing procedures mainly.
The recovery process after this procedure varies for different people. Usually, however, the patient is able to go back to their regular routine right after. They can eat and talk as they usually would. Some patients might develop a sore throat for a short period after the treatment but it will soon heal too. In case of soreness or discomfort, medication is prescribed to ease the healing process.
